5 Tips for your pup’s muscle knots

Share Article

A little bit of pampering goes a long way when focusing on the well-being of your dog.

Have you been tense from a hard day at work and thought you might have a kink in your neck from the stress? Well, like us, our doggos get stressed and their bodies can showcase symptoms of that stress. They can experience those pesky muscle knots too! Pet muscle knots can lead to discomfort and reduced mobility. So here are some tips to help your doggo with that tension:

What is a pet muscle knot?

Muscle knots, also known as myofascial trigger points, are tense and contracted areas in your pet’s muscles. They often appear due to overexertion, repetitive motions, or even stress. Spotting muscle knots in your pup may seem a tad trickier than in yourself, but keep an eye out for signs such as sensitivity when touched, limping, or changes in posture.

Tip #1: Gentle massage

Let’s do some pup-pampering! Just like how you enjoy a relaxing massage, your fluffy-butt will love some gentle kneading too. Using your fingertips, apply some light pressure around the muscle knots and gently massage the surrounding areas. Be patient with your pup and let them guide you – they’ll show you when they’re feeling the relief!

Tip #2: Cuddles with warm compresses

I’m sure your pup loves cuddles, I mean, who doesn’t? Warm compresses can do wonders for your pet’s muscle knots. Start out by getting a warm, damp towel and placing it over the affected area. The heat will help increase blood flow, relax the muscles, and reduce inflammation. Plus, it is an excellent excuse to snuggle up with your favorite furry friend.

Tip #3: Stretching

Yoga time…kind of. Help your pet stretch their muscles by engaging them in some light, playful activities. To maintain your doggo’s vitality, address hip and knee issues with some simple stretches. Loosen up their hip, lower back, and leg muscles by gently pulling their rear leg back in an extended position. Move slowly and confidently, holding the stretch for a few seconds before releasing and repeating. Do not force the movement if your pup doesn’t feel comfortable with it.

Tip #4: Exercise

A well-balanced exercise routine can keep your dog’s muscles strong and flexible. Exercise is essential, but moderation is the key. Overexertion can lead to muscle knots, so ensure your pet gets a healthy balance of activity and rest. A nice walk, or light jog every day can help the stiffness just like when we need it after a day of sitting at the office.

Tip #5: Professional pet massage

We have busy lives and sometimes we don’t have the time to give our pups that extra, needed care. So when in doubt, call in the pros!
